So you've gone to the time, expense and effort to complete some aspect of formal education. Or maybe you started to work on this, but then inevitably, life happened... had to take a job to pay the bills, got married, had kids, moved, etc. etc. There's a universe of things that life can throw at you that can interrupt even the most well-intentioned plans for education.

There are some rules of thumb out there when listing education on a resume which should be considered.

1. DON'T list the year you graduated. Unless you are in an education, government, scientific or highly technical field where having a date of graduation is essential, please don't broadcast how old you are by including this information. (Human resource managers do the math!) Sure, if you are an adult learner who just got done with a degree, it's new and important to you just like it is to a person fresh out of high school who immediately went to college. However, resist the temptation to perhaps look younger by listing the graduation date!

With the exception of the four fields mentioned above, the cold, hard truth about education is this:

Most employers really only care whether you graduated... Yes or No.

They don't care what your GPA was, how many times you made it to the Dean's list, what scholarships you landed, and sure, you can list that you graduated as magna cum laude or summa cum laude... but that often isn't a deciding factor as to whether or not to hire you- it just becomes distracting with all of the scholarships, awards, grade points, etc. Keep it clean and simple.

2. A common mistake recent graduates also make is that they want to list their education FRONT AND CENTER... naturally because this is generally the MOST IMPORTANT THING the person has ever done in their lives to date. However, most human resource managers are really probing for what kinds of experience that the person has, not their education. So the best advice is to put the education later in the résumé rather than near the beginning.

3. DO list all of your education. Some people in this economy are becoming sensitive about feeling 'over-qualified' or 'over-educated.' Think of it this way- employers are in the catbird seat right now... they can afford to hire workers that they couldn't dream of hiring just five years ago. So they are 'cherry-picking' the top candidates and if they can find a top leader in a field who is willing to come work for them, they'll gladly take them. Who wouldn'tall

Additionally, if you didn't complete a degree, you can indicate: "Program coursework in: (area of study).

Give yourself credit for the time you've put into it, even if the end result isn't what you had hoped for. It shows initiative and a desire to improve your knowledge and skills.

I've had a few clients that I've worked with who had put down a degree name on their résumé, but it turned out that during our consultation, that, well, they never ever REALLY ended up finishing their degree.

This kind of misrepresentation is one of the oldest tricks in the job search book... if this sounds like you, it would be in your best interest to be as forthright as possible about your educational background. Human resource managers are well aware of this trick!!! Quite honestly, the EASIEST background check to do in the world is to verify whether a person graduated or not from a particular institution. Fudging it or trying to convey a different impression is a fast-track to the trashbin for your résumé.

So this is an 'either' or an 'or' situation.

You'll want to call this specific section "Professional Development," which conveys to an employer that you are always actively taking steps to improve and hone your skills so you can do your job better.

Keeping your mind engaged while looking for employment is very important. Sometimes, being laid off is the very opportunity needed to open a new chapter for professional enhancement... there simply wasn't time for it previously. You never know where this can lead to! A recent client of mine spent the money to get certified with another industry credential. One of the requirements of the certification was to take an exam. When she showed up at the exam location, she found out that she was the only unemployed person there- everyone else was there through their company. The amazing thing was that she got three highly-qualified job leads by talking to the people there at the exam location... and she was so thrilled that the exam itself wasn't the highlight of the day!           

Education - How Important Is College?

This is a debate that has and will go on until the world itself stops spinning.  But the truth is, the way the world is constantly changing, a college education isn't the be all and end all that it used to be.  That is not to say that college isn't important.  But how importantall  Well, that all depends on what you want to do with your life.  We'll take a look at some of the factors involved in determining just how important college will be to you.

The first thing that even a good teacher will admit, is that not everybody is suited for college.  Some students just don't have the smarts or the grades.  That is not to say that they can't be successful in life without getting an education after high school that involves going to a fancy university.

Let's face it.  A lot of this world is run by people who work with their hands.  Think you're going to get through life without having a sink clog that's so bad that no amount of Liquid Plumber is going to get it out?  It happens.  Plus, pipes get old, rusty and fall apart.  For these jobs we need plumbers.  Try to imagine a life without one.  Well, in case you didn't know, plumbers don't have to go to college.  A good technical school specializing in things like plumbing and heating is all the education these people need.  The schools specialize in just what they need to learn to get the job done.  They don't have to take English Lit and Chemistry and there's no need for them to have to.

Having said that, if you want to be a doctor, well, college is pretty much the least of your worries because that is only a preview of the real work ahead of you, four years of medical school.  Same thing if you're planning on being a lawyer.  There's about three years of law school after that.

But what if you want to do something that's sort of in between technical and the college "professions?" For example, let's just say you want to work in a bank as a teller?  Do you really need to go to college for that?  Certainly everything you've needed to learn to do a job that simple has been learned in high school.  So what is college going to do for you?  Will it help you get the job any easier?  Will it make the job itself any easier?  This is where many people disagree.

The die hard college advocates argue that, because the competition is so fierce for even the simplest of jobs, not having a college education is the same as cursing yourself to a life of unemployment.  The argument is that everyone goes to college today and not to go is plain suicide.  Doesn't matter if you really need it or not.  You just have to go in order to have any chance.

Those who aren't so gung ho college argue that there are kids that just don't belong there and to keep them from earning a living for another four years and on top of that add another $100,000 plus to their debt is just plain ridiculous.  These kids should find jobs right away.  Even by working in a shipping department, if you get in with a good company, you can work your way up to the point where you're making a nice living.

So who's right and who's wrong?  Most likely, there is no right or wrong.  Everybody is different and each student has to decide what is best for him or her.            Helping Your Child Get The Best Education

Many parents are concerned about the quality of their children's education today. Times have changed and kids are under so much stress, they find it difficult to focus on their studies. Teachers are forced to meet quotas and pass kids through the system. Parents are busy juggling careers, home life, and social activities. With all these distractions, it is easy to see why the quality of education suffers. When education fails, our kids pay a high price.

It may seem cliché, but it is still true. To get ahead in the world, you need a good education. To succeed in college or trade school, you must first succeed in grade school and high school. Below are some things you can do to help make sure your child gets the best education possible.

First, start with the school. Make sure you send your child to a school that cares about kids and has programs in place to help them succeed. You have many options. You may consider private schools, public schools, or even home schooling. Your family may have to make sacrifices to get into a good school, but it will be worth the effort.

Once you have decided upon a school, you must stay closely involved with your child's progress. Get to know the teachers and principals. Stay informed about homework requirements and your child's progress. The most successful students are the ones with parents who are involved with the school system.

Give your child as much help as he needs so he can succeed in his lessons. You may need to go over his homework every night. Although he needs to do the work himself in order to learn, you can support him as much as possible so he doesn't carry a burden that is too heavy.

It may be necessary to limit extra curricular activities too. Your child needs an active social life to be happy and fit in at school. But if sports and clubs interfere with the time needed for studying, it may be time to rethink your schedule. Rushing your child from soccer practice to band practice and the squeezing in meals is a stressful way to live and that may negatively affect his ability to focus on school studies.

Remember, that with your help, your child can be a success in school and in life. It doesn't matter if your child attends Catholic schools, inner city schools, or alternative schools, as long as you are his biggest supporter and fan, he will be more likely to stay motivated to succeed. Teacher education is evolving and developing into a profession in itself. It is an important area in which the trainer is getting trained. And it is important, as these are the people who will spend maximum time with the young generation during their formative years.

Teacher education could be synonymous with teacher training and teacher development, but there is also a marked difference between the two. Basically, teacher education is a program that trains graduates to work in schools as teachers. It is a process or a course that an aspiring teacher has to undergo before she can get into the profession. Here, she receives training and educational information that will tell her how to impart the knowledge she has to the students. The course is an essential prerequisite, and the would-be teacher will attend lessons and lectures, and learn theories and new developments in the profession. She will get comprehensive training in material preparation for classes, methodologies, evaluation processes and standards, curriculum development and management of classrooms.

Education - Basic Necessity For All!

No Education, No Life! Just like food, water and air, education has become a basic necessity for everyone to survive in today's world. Education is a broad concept that refers to all the experiences in which students can learn something to develop and establish them in the society. Education could be formal and informal. Formal education consists of a systematic standard of instruction, teaching and training. This format is derived from many different disciplines of life, i.e., psychology, philosophy, biology, linguistics, sociology, etc. While informal education consists of the general etiquette, decorum, rules and codes of conduct in the society.

Informal education is what you get mostly and largely from your progenitors. Your initial lessons starts from home where you get to learn how to sit, stand, behave and speak in the society with elders, mates, friends and others. When you start learning certain decorum then comes the time to go for formal education which helps in refining your persona further with more useful and powerful knowledge. This formal education helps you achieve your ultimate goal in the society of being a successful man or a satisfied person (depending on your own aspirations). It also helps you be a better human being and a person with refined wisdom.

In contemporary scenario, no child should be without education, as it is almost impossible to survive without it. Now all the nations and states have made it mandatory to provide primary/ elementary education to all kids, unbiased of their caste, creed, race, status and nationality. Special kids who have some difficulty in reading and writing, like other normal kids, also have an absolute access to any normal school for learning things the way others do with a little more care and concern. Various special schools are also available for their better and hassle free growth.

Students, who wish to pursue higher studies from well reputed institutes, are provided with scholarships to help them reach their target in life. Several governments affiliated and private graduate colleges and vocational institutes are also available to their rescue.            Education, Local Issues and Federal Government

When people talk about education it is amazing how little they really understand. Funding for Education often has a lot to do with property taxes and therefore those folks who have wealth in real estate they are paying more for schools, even if they have no children in them.

Of course one might say that you can either pay for schools now or prisons, courts, rehabs and police later. Some say the problems facing education today are caused by the Bush Administration; that is utter non-sense.

In fact, President Bush went up to bat for students as they were graduating but could not even read. I know this because as the Founder of a Franchising Company, I was amazed with people who could not read the operations manuals, which I personally wrote at an eighth grade reading level. Obviously, we want people who graduate from High School to read rightall

Many teachers complain that the No Child Left Behind causes too much teaching in the classroom and Federal Monies come with "Strings Attached" with these Federal Programs, yes they do. What is the point? If the School Districts do not want the money, don't take it. I was once very involved in local municipal politics. Drove me nuts, many of the monies we sought, by the time we solved all the conditions of the strings attached, it was a waste anyway and so we chose not to do the project.

In my humble opinion, the Government does nothing very well and most everything less efficient than free markets could do. And if we increase social programs for our aging population, YES, taxes will have to increase. But I propose making our Government 'small enough to drown in the bathtub if we have to because Ronald Reagan was right on his Halloween Scary thought; "we are the government and we are here to help you"

Yes, indeed that is a most scary phrase and therefore I stand firm in my observations, experience and opinion on the matter, although no one can disagree with a teacher's comments about over crowding or 30-kids in the classroom dilemma. Education is a huge issue.

Boston - A Great Place For Sports, Food, Education, History, And More

Welcome to Boston

Boston is one of the most historically significant cities in America. Near the spot where the Pilgrims landed when they first arrived in America, this Massachusetts city is one of the most important cities in the U.S.

It is called the unofficial capital of New England, and ranks 20th in size for the U.S. The metropolitan area of Boston has a population of 7.6 million people, and is one of the most important financial centers in the U.S.

Boston is an international hub for education, with over 50 institutions for high learning, including Harvard and MIT, not to mention Boston College and Boston University. Students from all over the world work hard in school and try to get the best standardized test scores they can in hopes of attending one of these schools.

Not only is it an important city for education, commerce, industry, electronics, and technology, but it is also a major sports city.

The Red Sox, a Major League Baseball team that has won seven World Series championships, calls Boston home. Their stadium, the famous Fenway Park, has sold out more championship games than any other club in MLB. Fenway Park can hold nearly 40,000 people, and the fans that attend the local baseball games nearly fill the stadium every game.

The Boston Bruins is the local hockey team in the NHL that has captured five Stanley Cup trophies. The Boston Celtics, team of the legendary Larry Bird, have taken home 17 NBA championship titles. Both teams play in TD Garden stadium, which covers 3.2 acres and is worth $160 million.

The New England Patriots are also based in Boston, and this National Football League team has captured three Super Bowl championships. Their home stadium is the Gillette Stadium located just over 20 miles away from downtown Boston. This mammoth stadium can hold over 68,000 people, with 87 luxury seats and 6,000 club seats.

If you visit Boston, you cannot leave without visiting some of the places that depict Boston's historical significance. Walk the Freedom Trail, a 2.5 mile hike along some of the most famous historical sites in Boston. You will see where the Boston Tea Party took place, the house of Paul Revere, the site of the Boston Massacre, and many more places significant to American history.

Take a walk up to Bunker Hill, and see where American soldiers stood bravely against British soldiers in the Revolutionary War. Look at the mammoth obelisk, over 200 feet high, that stands as a commemoration of the bravery of these heroes.

If you are a bibliophile, you cannot pass up the opportunity to visit the Boston Public Library. Home to one of the largest collections of books in the world, the Boston Public Library also holds rare prints, fine pieces of art, and more.

Take a tour of the MIT campus. One of the world's most renowned institution's for technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology has a sprawling campus and a 90 minute tour through the entire complex. Students work very hard to gain admission to this school, and others in the Boston area, through hard work, good grades, and quality test prep.

The New England Aquarium offers a great source of entertainment to children of all ages, free of charge. Bring the kids to see all kinds of marine life, including sharks swimming in huge tanks, giant sea turtles, and whale-watching cruises.

Love to eatall Take a stroll in the Quincy Market, where every Wednesday they have an International Food Fair in which you can taste food from all over the world at no cost to you. If you love to see parades and floats, Boston has two or more citywide events between the months of March and June.

Education is always important. It all starts with early childhood education. The importance of early childhood education is this is the foundation of every child's learning.

It all starts with the parents and caregivers. When a child is born and up to age six they have the fastest brain development. That means they are ready to learn and need to learn. Children with parents that focus on early childhood education, whether at home or in a preschool are helping build an education foundation for their child. It is also important for parents to stay involved and encourage their children. It doesn't matter if the child is three or 13. Children want their parent's approval and encouragement.

Working with a child also helps create a bond with the parent and the child. Starting early means this bond could stay throughout the child's formal education. This will help children throughout their education to have someone to support them. Children will also know and feel comfortable coming to their parent for assistance with homework and their education overall.

Other family members and family friends are also important to help promote early education. It gives children different ways of teaching and learning styles. Another element is it helps parents know their child is still getting attention even if they have a busy schedule from time to time. Additionally, it is not compulsory that there is a fixed time for educating the child. Children learn best when they are at play, so try to make learning a fun-filled activity. The love for learning, satisfying the curiosity of the child and fun learning and education should be part of the development of the child in any home.

Of course teachers are vital to early childhood education. If the child goes to preschool and then start their early education they will be working with a professional teacher. The teacher will lead the child on the right educational path. Parents are still very important as well. Parents can help their child with homework as well as reading to them. Even the youngest child benefits from being read to regularly. When a parent reads to their child or even reads their own books when their child can see it, is a great example for the child.

Getting started with early education does not mean it has to be a formal education. Singing the ABCs, working educational games, and toys are a way to start. It can be fun as well as educational. Even when it comes to reading to a child doesn't have to take up a lot of time. Just 15 minutes daily is helpful. Parents and caregivers can pick what is good for their family. It could be after lunch, before bed or any other time during the day. As a child grows so will their ability to take on early education lessons. A lovable home and caring parents that take interest in the child's development forms that basis of the first step of education.

What is considered an education for my childall

Education, I believe, is the whole learning process of not only acquiring knowledge but, to a deeper level, for a person to discover more about himself as well as the world which he is living in. Thus, it is not so much about learning specific subject content such as Mathematics, Science, English or Moral Education per se but how we can apply this knowledge wisely in our daily lives. More importantly, good education also probes and analyses the process of learning that is unique in every one of us.

Being a father, the question beckons-what kind of education do I want for my child?

In all honesty, I want an education which allows my daughter the freedom to discover, explore and experience this world in her own eyes and to form her own view of it. It has to be an enriching and challenging learning adventure. I also hope that she learns the importance of discipline and enjoys the wonders of Nature in her learning process. Most importantly, it must be able to nurture the positive attitudes in her to be strong, resilient, determined, willing to take on challenges but yet be peace-loving and graceful in the way she treats everyone.

However, I felt that most education systems today fail in the task that they are designed to do-to nurture a Balanced Child. There is really nothing wrong with having workbooks, assessment papers, enrichment classes and etc. But are we doing too much of a good thing and destroying our child's present and future in the process? That's the crux of the predicament that most children in Singapore, Hong Kong (and Asia in general) are facing. We, as parents, have robbed them of their childhood!

Whatever happened to good ol' common sense? Where is the BALANCE in the whole scheme of things? I am not against the idea of sending my daughter for enrichment classes when she gets older, but I will definitely ensure that she enjoys the whole learning process. Needless to say, I want my child to have ample time for fun, play and most of all, family!

Parents, let's not be extremists in the things we do for our children. I understand your worries and concerns but we need to seek BALANCE in all things we do. Think about the criminal trials of Michael Jackson and his lamentations of having his childhood robbed. The last thing I want to hear from my daughter when she grows up is that I have robbed her Childhood unknowingly. And unfortunately, I cannot give her Childhood back to her.
Reflect upon this.

So, dear Parents, don't be too hard on yourself. Let's take stock of what we are doing for our Child and smooth out the rough edges. At the end of the day, the best education for your Child starts with having Great parents like YOU around them.

This morning I read a list of influential and prominent people who died the past year.  Many I do not recall such as the former king of Cambodia.  Others with familiar names do not matter to me.  These are people either famous for being famous or merely unworthy of recognition.

So, who on that list does cause me to pause and rememberall  At the top of my list is Neil Armstrong.  Many summer days found a much, much younger me on my back in a local park smelling the grass and gazing at the sky waiting for sight of anything flying higher than local birds.  Back then, summer clouds were magical, big, puffy, and floating by so slowly.

I was an urban youth and did not know anyone who had ever been on a plane.  I longed to fly.  At night, we stared at the stars, not knowing that many we saw were no longer bright.  It was only their memory coming to us across space light years away.  Space to me was TV''s Tom Corbett, Space Cadet.  I thought that show was cheezy.  I remember Buster Crabbe's movie Flash Gordon as no better.

Years later I was traveling across Montana on business with my wife of a couple of months and we checked into a small motel, getting the 'bridal suite' because that room had the only remaining working TV.  We sat on the edge of a heart-shaped bed and watched Walter Cronkite guide us through the LEM's landing, seeing Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin actually walk on the moon's surface.

Years later, I met Dr. Aldrin.  I have shared his company many times.  Buzz and I have never talked about the moon.  I know other astronauts with whom I speak of their space experiences.  When I have a chance to talk to Aldrin, I ask about his next adventure, not the 1969 moon landing.  When near him, speaking one-on-one or seated across the room, in my mind we are walking together across the lunar surface.

My dream, at this advanced age, is still to travel in space.  I learned to free myself from earth flying private aircraft and flight still amazes me every time I go up.  Over the years, I have built and launched hobbyist rockets, teaching my sons and grandchildren the thrill of the whoosh when our solid fuel ignites sending frail tubes aloft.

People I hold dear include the folks at Microcosm; a Hawthorne, CA based engineering firm where next generation rocket engines are developed.  I am proud to know Lt. Gen (ret) Gene Tattini, Deputy Director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  We first met when General Tattini commanded the Space and Missile Systems Center at the Los Angeles Air Force Base.

It is a blessing to know hundreds and hundreds of engineers, scientists, and program managers at The Aerospace Corporation, Lockheed, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, and their suppliers.  People all doing magical things with metal, ceramics, silicon and computer code, developing space platform technology making possible the world as we know it.  Think of them every time you make a cell phone call or text a friend.

No, I am not a scientist, nor an engineer.  I just know what excites and astounds me and enjoy listening to those who really know what they are doing.  Especially when what they are doing is in deep space.  Thank you, Neil Armstrong and all the men and women who have made my childhood fantasies reality.

My hope today as we enter a new year is for us to learn how to educate the next generation of people worthy of recognition during their lifetime and after.  With all the man-made problems confronting our nation, education is one easily solved without pain.  It only takes those creating the problem getting out-of-the-way.           

Education - University Degree

With the escalating cost of higher education, many people have begun to question the value of pursuing a college degree.  The struggle to earn a living and attain valuable knowledge to increase future earning potential is a dilemma for many folks.  However, research has revealed that the rate of return on the investment to earn a university degree for both the individual and society over the long run is over 118% on average.

Financial value of earning a higher education university degree:  A breakdown of the U.S. Census Bureau results reveals that over the working life of an adult, high school graduates earn an average of $1.2 million; associate's degree holders earn approximately $1.6 million; and those who hold a bachelor's degree earn about $2.1 million.  When you consider the large differences in earning between these categories, it makes the value of a college education and university degree quite apparent.  Alternatively, the U.S. Department of Education has determined that a full-time student at a 4-year public university pays an average of $8,655 for tuition, room and board and a full-time student at a public 2-year university pays the average of $1,359 per year for tuition.  Although higher education can be costly, it dramatically increases an individual's earning capacity.

Social value of earning a higher education university degree:  In their 1992 report, Elchanan Cohn and Terry Geske found that "college graduates appear to have a more optimistic view of their past and future personal progress."  The improved self-esteem of people holding a university degree makes them more viable candidates for many positions in the job market along with the confidence to pursue those jobs.

Public value of earning a higher education university degree:  The Institute for Higher Education Policy has found that public benefits of attending college are greater productivity in the workplace, more workforce flexibility, increased tax benefits and less need to rely on governmental financial support.  People who hold a university degree revel in being self-sufficient because of their ability to earn an adequate living.

Personal value of earning a higher education university degree:  Furthermore, the Institute for Higher Education Policy reports that college graduates have higher levels of savings, more hobbies, increased professional mobility, a better quality of life for their children and even make better decisions as consumers.  The skills learned while acquiring a university degree are also applied in a beneficial manner to everyday living.

Health value of earning a higher education university degree:  The Cohn and Geske study in 1992 revealed that "parental schooling levels are positively correlated with the health status of their children" and "increased schooling are correlated with lower mortality for given age brackets".  Most people who hold a university degree pursue jobs they derive pleasure from which decreases stress and such jobs often offer better health insurance plans to their employees, resulting in improved overall health.

So what is the potential for people who pursue a university degree but do not actually earn itall  A study done by Boesel and Fredland in 1999 found that those who do not complete their degree earn less than, or the same amount as, 2-year college students.  Since 600,000 students leave 4-year colleges every year without graduating, it may be wise in certain circumstances to earn a 2-year degree before pursuing a 4-year degree.  Earning a 2-year degree first can maximize personal earning potential without accruing educational debt for a 4-year program that may not be completed.

The value of deciding to earn a university degree is indisputable. For busy people seeking flexibility, earning a university degree is easier to attain with the convenience of online education.  Almost any curriculum can be studied through online courses and a valid degree awarded.  According to Making the Grade: Online Education in the United States, 2006, nearly 3.2 million students took at least one course online during the 2005 fall semester, which represented a substantial increase over the 2.3 million reported the year before.  The same report states that most Chief Academic Officers believe that the quality of online instruction is actually equal to or better than traditional learning face-to-face.  The knowledge and skills gains by taking an online course are equivalent to going to the trouble and inconvenience of attending classes in a traditional setting.
